Curating Interactive Art for Online Conferences: Artist, Curator and Technologist Experiences in Gather.Town

We present the results of a reflective, practice-based study with creative practitioners who contributed to the Art Track at Creativity & Cognition 2021. We investigate curating an interactive online gallery in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, focusing on the opportunities afforded and design constraints imposed by the Gather.Town platform and the experiences of the participating practitioners. We present auto-ethnographic reflections from Author 1, who created the online gallery space. We draw on the experience of Author 2 in curatorial research to analyze the experience of emerging practice through interviews with participating artists and curators. Results show that many of the artists were positively surprised by the platform engagement opportunities and conference attendees' engagement with the artworks at the gallery opening, and appreciated the equitable, global reach. Further analysis reveals a desire for future iterations, and an exploration of the platform in a hybrid context, alongside an in-person exhibition

Art.CHI II: Digital art in a post-digital world

© 2016 Authors. At CHI2015 our Art.CHI initiative led to a two-day workshop, an art catalog and presentations during Interactivity. The long-term plan is to turn this into a regular feature of CHI. For CHI2016 we will additionally use a gallery space within the Conference concourse. This workshop will invite digital artists to present their work, discuss its immediate impact with other digital artists and consider long-term issues and investigations in the interface between CHI and digital art. Towards this end our theme for Art.CHI II is Digital Art in a Post-Digital World

    What is Initiative?

This paper presents some alternate theories for explaining the term "initiative", as it is used in the design of mixed-initiative AI systems. Although there is now active research in the area of mixed initiative interactive systems, there appears to be no true consensus in the field as to what the term "initiative" actually means. In describing different possible approaches to the modeling of initiative, we aim to show the potential importance of each particular theory for the design of mixed initiative systems. The paper concludes by summarizing some of the key points in common to the theories, and by commenting on the inherent difficulties of the exercise, thereby elucidating the limitations which are necessarily encountered in designing such theories as the basis for designing mixed-initiative systems. Keywords: initiative, discourse, goals and plans This paper has not been submitted elsewhere in identical or similar form, nor will it be during the first three months after its subm..

Curating the Digital: Spaces for Art and Interaction

This workshop intends to use the key strength of the CHI Community; research linked to practice, to design an Art Catalog for CHI. The workshop will start with an examination of current research in curating interactive art. The outcomes of the first phase of the workshop will then feed into Design Charrette exercises that will involve prototyping an Art Catalog and developing ideas for presenting a future Art Gallery event as part of the CHI conference. The results from the workshop will then form the basis of an agenda of a Spotlight SIG meeting where we will discuss the nature of the CHI Art Catalog. Workshop outcomes will also be disseminated to a wider audience
